SLOW TO SPEAK BUT QUICK TO LISTEN

By: Linda Kirby

James 1:19--Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: This passage has a couple of ways to look at it. But, I want to bring out the understanding about slow to speak and quick to listen. Today, the world is in utter chaos. It is right to say, it’s gone mad! People who have tried so hard to stay level headed are finding it harder and harder to keep from exploding from all the evil, chaos, madness that is going on. Many people just need to vent to someone who might feel the same as they feel. Being quick to listen and slow to speak gives a brother or sister a chance to let go of their righteous anger before they boil over. We don’t have to speak, because they really just want to let go. It may be needed to speak later, but be quick to listen to them. Don’t worry that you might be delayed from your errand. Don’t worry about having something you need to do and you don’t want to take the time to listen. God knows we all get to that point where if we don’t let go, we will explode and that’s one reason he said to be quick to listen and slow to speak. Let your friend have the time needed to vent. Listen in a way, they know you are hearing them. You might need that courtesy one day yourself.
